Skagway, “the roughest town on earth;” home to more than 80 saloons and crafty swindlers. Or at least that’s what it was like 100 years ago during the Klondike Gold Rush when it was the first stop on the 500 mile journey to the goldfields. Now, the cozy city of Skagway serves as a port and railroad town with plenty of historic storefronts and refurbished saloons to remind tourists of Alaska’s very own “wild, wild west.”
As the northernmost stop of Alaska’s Inside Passage, Skagway is surrounded by towering, snow-capped mountains. A railroad climb to the 2,885 foot summit of White Pass is the best way to take in your surroundings, and, of course, join the elite “White Pass Summit Club.” If you’d rather stay closer to land, catamaran cruises and dog-sled tours of the beautiful Yukon region are available as well.
It’s easy to see why tourists have been visiting this charismatic community since 1898. Whether it’s watching reenacted gunfights, trekking across glaciers, or visiting sky-high mountain peaks, Skagway has a little something for the adventurer in all of us.
