Accessible only by air or sea, the historic port town of Ketchikan is a secluded hideaway located in the heart of the Tongass National Forest. Surrounded by a thriving rainforest and ice blue waters, Ketchikan serves as the gateway to Alaska’s Inside Passage.

Rustic museums scattered throughout the town remind visitors that before Ketchikan was a tourist port, it was supported by fishing and timber industries. It has been known as the salmon capital of the world ever since the first saltery opened there in 1883.

Tour options abound in this historic town, from zip-lining through the rainforest, to taking a horse-drawn trolley down to the world’s largest collection of standing totem poles. Visit Misty Fiords National Monument, where you can enjoy indigenous cave paintings, beautiful ocean inlets and spotting wildlife like whales, bears, and sea lions. For lunch, eat the day’s catch at a local restaurant, or hook your own on a local fishing charter.

Cafes overlooking the harbor make an ideal afternoon break to relax with the locals. Ketchikan is home to both native and contemporary artists alike, and was once named one of America’s Top 100 Small Arts Communities. It’s no secret the town has been influenced by its artistic residents; just stop in any of the multiple galleries or one of the yellow, blue, or even pink buildings along the boardwalk.

Discover Alaska’s lively rainforest city, a beautiful start on your journey to the Inside Passage.
