Inaccessible by road, Juneau was founded as a small town site by two adventurous gold prospectors in 1880 and quickly grew into a boomtown during the Klondike Gold Rush. Now, it is the capital city of Alaska and the destination of over 800,000 visitors every summer.
Nestled between the water and the rainforest, Juneau has a small town appeal with a big city style. Museums dedicated to the area’s rich history spread out across the town, while downtown Juneau offers first-rate cuisine and high-end shopping opportunities. The capital city is also home to Alaska’s only professional theater, multiple art galleries and annual jazz and folk music festivals.
Like much of Alaska, Juneau is famous for its beautiful mountain scenery, glaciers, fiords, and wildlife. Though the city is only 45 miles from end to end, it has over 130 miles of hiking trails available. For an afternoon adventure, wander down Nugget Trail to see a five-story waterfall near the front of the Mendenhall glacier or go for a hike up on top for an impressive scenic experience.
Juneau is indeed Alaska’s gem; a melting pot of cultures, history, friendly locals, and adventurous opportunities. One visit to this remote yet thriving city is enough to understand why so many come back to stay.
